About me

My name is Kai and I am a self-taught collage artist and an emerging children’s author & illustrator. I have a passion for community, nature and cutting up paper. 

 

Collage often feels like solving a puzzle, and I’m simply deciphering where each piece belongs. By mixing unlikely patterns and colors, I create rich illustrations that immerse viewers into my world of collage. I most often work with found patterns, strategically using shadow and light to create more depth in my work and interweave whimsy and realism. I feel humbled that the unique artistry of so many others is what I believe makes my work special. I am one small part of a whole, and am better for that than I could ever be alone. Everything I make reflects that feeling.

 

In my children’s book writings, I reconcile nuanced, heavy themes with accessible language that resonates with all ages alike. Despite my colorful illustrations, I am drawn to the grey areas of life, a deep believer in the bittersweet.
